Bethany Dining Chair

The Bethany Dining Chair is a striking architectural dining chair that combines tactile upholstery with a bold, almost sculptural frame. Its distinctive silhouette is defined by three broad blade-style supports, creating a strong geometric presence while keeping the space beneath the seat visually open.

The generously padded seat and softly curved backrest are upholstered in a Chenille black fabric, bringing depth and subtle tonal variation to the monochrome palette. The backrest gently curves around the body, while its rolled outer edges give the chair a softer counterpoint to the disciplined geometry below.

The frame is wrapped in a smooth black leather finish, with precise edge stitching that emphasises the construction. Viewed from behind, the sweeping central back support becomes an important design feature, secured to the upholstered backrest with a tailored strap and metal stud detailing.

Bethany has a distinctly design-led character, balancing 1970s Italian Modernist references with contemporary sculptural furniture design. It works particularly well where the dining chairs are intended to become part of the architecture of the room rather than simply surrounding the table.

Why You'll Love It

Bethany is particularly effective because its structure is as important as its upholstery. Rather than using conventional four legs, the broad vertical supports create a substantial architectural profile, giving the chair an almost gallery-piece quality.

The all-black palette prevents the unusual construction from becoming visually chaotic. Instead, differences in texture create the detail: softly textured upholstery sits against the smoother leather-look frame, while subtle stitching and metal hardware reward closer inspection.

The rear view is equally considered, making Bethany particularly suitable for open-plan dining spaces where chairs are frequently seen from behind.

Styling Inspiration

For a Italian Modernist dining room, position Bethany around a substantial table in dark walnut, smoked glass or richly figured marble. Introduce an oversized Murano-inspired glass chandelier and use tobacco, chocolate, cream and bronze elsewhere in the room. The chair's broad supports and rounded upholstered forms reference the expressive, substantial furniture silhouettes associated with the period.

For a Monochrome Art-Led interior, pair Bethany with a black or deeply veined stone dining table against warm off-white plaster walls. Add oversized abstract artwork, a sculptural pendant and very few decorative objects. Keeping the surrounding palette restrained allows the unusual construction of the chair to read almost as an individual design object.

For a Collectible Contemporary scheme, combine Bethany with a monolithic travertine or marble table and statement lighting with an intentionally artistic silhouette. Introduce one or two contrasting materials—perhaps polished stainless steel, dark timber or hand-finished plaster rather than matching every finish. This approach emphasises Bethany's sculptural quality.

In a Boutique Hotel dining setting, use several Bethany chairs around a large oval table with low-level architectural lighting, dark timber wall panelling and warm ambient illumination. Bronze accessories and richly textured curtains can soften the predominantly black chair while retaining its sophisticated, dramatic character.
